Ride Etiquette
We look forward to welcoming new members. To ensure that everyone has as safe and enjoyable a ride as possible, please read and adhere to the following:
- You join the ride at own risk
- You must wear a helmet
- You must ensure that your bike is in a roadworthy condition and that you have a spare inner tube and pump in case of punctures; we will help you to fix these if possible
- For safety reasons, you should not use earphones or use a phone while cycling
- You should be able to control your bike one handed, when it is safe to do so, so that you can take a drink or point out potholes and other road hazards
- If the roads are really wet please use mudguards. If you don’t have any please ride at the back to help keep everyone else clean
- For evening rides or in murky weather make sure you have working lights front and rear
- Arrive a few minutes early as the ride will leave the meeting point promptly
- Do not overtake the Ride Leader, except on hills (up or down), unless advised to by them
- Point out or shout a loud and clear warning for hazards eg obstacles, loose gravel and potholes and give clear signals or verbal warning of slowing down, stopping, approaching cars, turning etc
- Shout out a warning if you are overtaking, or coming alongside, another rider in the group - particularly on the inside
- On hills, ride at your own pace, the ride will regroup in a safe place
- Ride in a steady line and at a constant pace whenever possible, maintaining awareness of other riders and road users.
- Be aware of and follow the Highway Code at all times, remember we are all ambassadors for the group
- Ride two abreast only when safe to do so.
- Do not wave cars through. Let the driver decide when it is safe to do so
